INTEGRATING NON-FORCE CHIROPRACTIC, EXERCISE REHABILITATION & CONSERVATIVE ORTHOPEDIC CARE
Dr. Fowler was born on the Lower East Side in NYC on November 13, 1958. He grew up in Rockland County in a farmhouse adjacent to the Harriman State Park. The house built in 1850 and beautifully restored was home to him, his five siblings, and his parents. He cared for a menagerie at home, which consisted of two ponies, dogs, cats, birds, gerbils, fish, chickens, ducks, and a sweet white goat named Gretel. A selfless mother supported his love for animals and his desire to become a veterinarian. As a teenager, he worked at an animal hospital, cleaning cages and working himself up to assist with medical procedures. Unfortunately, the doctor who owned the practice was more interested in the money he could extract from his patient’s owners than in helping his patients. This put in perspective the realities of veterinary medicine for him.
Dr. Fowler was used to his stoic Irish American father having frequent back and leg pain, which was sometimes disabling. His father had injuries to his back including a large horse rearing up so high it fell back on top of him, a car accident which would have killed him if he hadn’t dared to jump out before it slammed into a big tree, moving a piano, etc. Since many of Dr. Fowler’s family members are in medicine, his father was sent to the “so called” experts that pumped him full of drugs and insisted on surgery repeatedly. A friend of his recommended he consider treatment with a Chiropractor in our church; the results of his treatment were nothing short of a miracle. This experience shifted Dr. Fowler’s focus from Veterinary Medicine to Chiropractic.
During High School, Dr. Fowler got involved with weight training and gained 90 pounds in three years during a growth spurt, he then started training in martial arts starting with hard styles of Karate. This sequence turned out to be injurious as he had too much power and not adequate flexibility or stabilization. Six styles of martial arts over a 50-year period resulted in both spinal and extremity injuries, which were extensive.
Dr. Fowler started seeing a Chiropractor while living on the North Shore of Long Island with his five cousins and Aunt and Uncle who was a Cardio-thoracic Surgeon (not very supportive of his choice to become a chiropractor). Unfortunately, his response to treatment was not the overwhelming success his father had, and it got worse in school when students were crudely performing these maneuvers of twisting and cracking. While these maneuvers, when performed skillfully, help countless people, they didn’t work very well for him.
One fateful day he met a student about to graduate by the name of Don Hart who introduced him to a very different type of Chiropractic called Directional Non-Force Technique (DNFT). The results of this treatment were wonderful as the first treatment took away very chronic and painful knee pain and dramatically reduced chronic and miserable low back pain. Unfortunately, the pain kept returning to varying degrees and the Chiropractic solution at that time was frequent ongoing treatment. Anything that effective couldn’t be incorrect, but clearly was incomplete. This led to post graduate studies and extensive testing over eight years resulting in a diplomate in Orthopedics. This program was through The National Chiropractic College in Lombard Illinois and sponsored by the American Chiropractic Association. It was through this program that Dr. Fowler became proficient in Orthopedic Evaluation and the use of custom foot orthotics and orthopedic braces for the spine and extremities when indicated.
Further study and testing over the next four years led to a second diplomate in Exercise Rehabilitation. This helped further his understanding of movement patterns and kinesiological assessment and treatment to achieve strength and stability. This study through the Southern California University of Health Sciences, sponsored by the American Chiropractic Association was largely based on US and Canadian principles taught by Craig Liebenson, D.C., and Professor Stu McGill, Ph.D.
This led to the past 20+ years of extensive study and testing for diplomate status in Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS), which put it all together looking at developmental kinesiology (how we move as a baby during the developmental process known as Ontogenesis). DNS has complemented his DNFT, Orthopedic, and Rehabilitation practice. Identifying and correcting muscle imbalances and promoting stability has improved patient outcomes significantly.
Additional DNS certifications in Exercise Trainer, and Pediatric practitioner have expanded Dr. Fowler’s practice to work with adults, children, and babies. Training in Women’s health has helped greatly in treating women and men with pelvic floor dysfunction. Even slight Pelvic Floor weakness can lead to core instability and subsequent problems.
Dr. Fowler has attended advanced six-day DNS courses in Prague 9 times, and basic, intermediate, and advanced DNS courses dozens of times in the United States and Canada. These courses, while challenging, have been very enlightening not only due to the course material but the opportunity to study with the best Chiropractors as well as Medical Doctors, Osteopaths, Physical Therapists, PhDs, and Athletic Trainers from around the world. This has enabled productive rapport with all professionals who treat the musculoskeletal system. Most bigotry comes from ignorance and cooperation comes from knowledge. Every profession has something to offer, and patients often need an integrated approach.
Dr. Fowler’s treatment philosophy is: “Through treatment, advice and referral we will find a solution for your pain and help you learn how to care for yourself reducing your reliance on others for health”.
