Custom Foot Orthotics

An 'orthotic' is a device designed to restore your natural foot function. Many 'biomechanical' (walking) complaints such as heel pain, knee pain and lower back pain are caused by poor foot function. Orthotics re-align the foot and ankle bones to their neutral position, thereby restoring natural foot function. In turn this helps alleviate problems in other parts of the body.

In addition, orthotics provide a more even weight distribution, taking pressure of sore spots (e.g. the ball of the foot, corns in between toes, bunions etc) and they provide shock absorption.

Who needs orthotics?
Orthotics benefit people with a myriad of conditions (26 specific diagnoses are related to hyperpronation or collapsed arches of the feet). Pain often developes in the feet and most commonly create heel spur pain, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, and tentinitis. Pain can also develop in the knee from hyperpronation; research shows that up to 76% of inner knee pain is related to hyperpronation in the feet.

Many pelvic and back problems are related to hyperpronation of the feet as well; the stress from improper gait spirals up the chain, torques the pelvis and shuts off muscles needed for proper support and function.

Can you wear the orthotics during all daily activities?
People who stand or walk all day will benefit from orthotics.
If you suffer from pain during any form of sporting exercise then orthotics can reduce the pain associated with your condition.
For overweight individuals, orthotics will help to counteract the extra stress being placed on the feet.

What specific conditions may be helped?
Below is a list of all the conditions that orthotics can help.
Achilles Tendonitis, Corns, Metatarsalgia, Sesamoiditis, Ankle Sprains, Flat Feet, Neuroma, Tendonitis, Arch Pain, Heel Pain, Pronation, Top of the foot pain, Bunions, Knee Pain, Shin Pain, Toe Pain. Imbalance in your feet can alter the bony structure of your feet and lower legs, foot orthotics may eliminate posture problems and foot and leg pain.

Do I need a physician's prescription to get custom orthotics?
No. Chiropractors are primary health care professionals and therefore do not need a physician's referral. Custom orthotics are orthotics that are especially molded to your feet.

Are all orthotics the same? No, there are many different types of orthotics on the market today. The orthotics designed by Dr. Fowler are unique in that they are relatively new and advanced technology of "functional orthotics". They are full contact orthotics in that they contact the full arch throughout the entire gait cycle vs. just at full foot contact with the groundlike most orthotics. Because of their revolutionary design, they move with your foot during the gait cycle vs. rigid orthotics which do not. They control your foot during the entire gait cycle thereby easing tortional dysfunction up the entire lower extremity, pelvis and spine.

Why do I need orthotics?
Imbalances of the bones of the feet can result in abnormal foot motion (over pronation). This can impair foot function which can result in abnormal rotation of the legs and sometimes affects the knees, hips or back. If we combine these tremendous forces with the need for precise balance, we can see how small structural changes in the foot can make significant differences. Orthotics help to improve those structural changes.

Does it take time to get used to orthotics?
Your feet need time to adjust to the correct biomechanical (walking) position. Orthotics should be broken in gradually. For most adults, they should be worn one hour the first day, two hours the second day etc. You should not run in orthotics until you can wear them comfortably the whole day.

Should I integrate other treatment with orthotic use?Orthotics are not a panacea and the right orthotic will produce significant structural changes in the body. In order for these changes to be optimal it is often helpful for precise chiropractic care to help guide your body through these changes. If you need orthotics you have muscle imbalances and often balance issues as well, which should be addressed through corrective exercises that can be doneat home. These exercises often involve the use of inexpensive balance training tools.

Can anyone cast for orthotics? No, you must be certified by the orthotic manufacturing company that fabricates the orthotics. And, as with most procedures there are varying degrees of training and experience that enter into the success rate of orthodic design and function. Dr. Fowler was on the board of directors for three years for Sole Supports, Inc. an innovative orthotics company. Dr. Glaser is the president of this company and he developed the new Dynamic Orthotic technology used in our clinics. Dr. Fowler taught for two years around the country with Dr. Glaser to bring this technology to the chiropractic profession. He is currently putting together another teaching program with Icon Orthotics located in Clearwater Fla. This lab teaches state of the art gait analysis and dynamic "functional" orthotic design. Dr. Fowler will help bring this technology to chiropractors and integrate spinal stabilization protocol.

During the break-in period it is important to treat the soft tissue on the walking surface of the feet to make the process more comfortable.
